Breast Lift

What is a Breast Lift?

A mastopexy or “breast lift” is a surgery to lift and tighten the breast skin. The size of the breast remains the same or may be slightly reduced.

What is Breast Ptosis?

Ptosis means “to fall”. Breast ptosis refers to the degree of “dropping” of the breast skin and nipple after a period of breast size increase, such as, during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight gain. Your surgery plan is tailored to you. It will depend on how much the nipple will be raised and how the skin will be tightened.

Who Can Have a Breast Lift?

Healthy women who are looking for a change in their current breast shape may undergo a breast lift. The most common reasons for a breast lift are:

  • To improve a lowered breast shape to a higher position
  • To raise the nipple and reduce the areola

The ideal patients for the surgery will be at a BMI of less than 30, have had clear mammograms, have no active breast cancer, are non-smoker, with a stable breast size and weight. If you are looking for upper breast fullness or increasing the size, you may need implants.

The Surgery

Breast lift surgery is “day surgery”, meaning you will go home the same day. The surgery is generally completed in under 2 hours. You may need some tests before surgery. You will have a pre-operative surgery appointment where you have an opportunity to ask questions. On the day of surgery, the surgeon will mark the breast. The scars will depend on the shaping.

Recovery After Surgery

The usual recovery time is 2-4 weeks. Most people are able to appear in public with clothes after 1 week. To keep your breasts in the ideal position and to prevent swelling, it is recommended that you do not exercise for 6 weeks and that you wear a surgical bra. In the first 3 months, your breasts will appear higher than their final position. During the first year after surgery, you will notice that your breasts will soften and change. After this time, the result will be stable.
