Lumpectomy Reconstruction

What is Lumpectomy Reconstruction?

A lumpectomy involves a partial removal of the breast tissue for the purpose of diagnosing or treating breast disease. This loss in volume may affect the breast shape and symmetry, particularly if a large amount is removed relative to the breast size.

Who Can Have Lumpectomy Reconstruction?

Healthy patients with low risk factors (BMI < 30, no cigarette smoking) who have a distortion of the breast shape may choose to undergo a lumpectomy reconstruction. This may involve:

  • Skin and scar tissue release
  • Volume augmentation with natural tissue or an implant
  • Reshaping the remaining breast

Lumpectomy reconstruction can be complex, especially after breast cancer treatment. Most have undergone radiotherapy. You will need to discuss your circumstance with a surgeon specializing in breast cancer reconstruction.

What is Oncoplastic Surgery?

Oncoplastic surgery is performed by experienced breast surgeons who perform a lumpectomy using plastic surgery techniques. Dr. Lee provides oncoplastic lumpectomy reconstruction by designing the lumpectomy similar to a breast reduction. This allows for a wider removal of tissue in a manner that preserves the cosmetic appearance of the breast.

In certain cases, a reduction of the other breast may be performed at the same time to balance the breasts. If you would like more information on your lumpectomy reconstruction options, a referral may be made by your doctor to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Lee.
