Breast Reduction

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery includes a size reduction as well as a nipple and skin lift. This may be insured for symptom reduction depending on the findings from your plastic surgeon.

The following are NOT insured and are considered cosmetic surgery:

  • Breast size reduction for cosmetic purposes
  • Breast lift only, without making the breasts smaller (“mastopexy”)
  • Liposuction to remove extra fat
  • Breast and nipple shaping

Who Can Have a Breast Reduction?

If you have heavy breasts that are causing problems with pain, skin rashes, and infection, breast reduction will help. Any patient who is healthy enough to be at low risk for general anaesthesia can have the surgery. If applicable, this surgery may be insured. Each case is reviewed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for eligibility. This can be discussed in your personal consultation with your plastic surgeon.

The Surgery

The surgery is a combination of a breast size reduction and skin lift if needed. The skin is lifted, the extra breast tissue removed, and reclosed around the nipple. The nipple stays attached to your breast. Any breast tissue removed is sent for testing to make sure there is no serious disease.

The scars will depend on how much skin needs to be removed. The vertical pattern scar (or “lollipop” scar) is useful for patients whose breasts have not dropped significantly, or only require a small size reduction. The Wise pattern scar (or “anchor” scar) is useful to tighten the lower skin in breasts that have dropped significantly. Breast reduction is a “day surgery” meaning you will go home the same day of the surgery. The surgery generally lasts between 2-3 hours. You may need some tests before surgery. The surgeon will meet you before your surgery to draw marks to guide the surgery. The anesthesiologist will meet you to discuss the safety of your surgery.

Recovery After Surgery

When you wake up you will have tapes and gauze pads over the breasts. A surgical bra or tensor wrap is placed over the breasts to give extra support. Usually 2-4 weeks are needed to recover. You can return to work sooner if you feel well enough. Your surgeon will see you during the recovery period to ensure you are healing and start scar therapy.
